Clarinetist Erik Johnson performs works of Mozart, Messiaen and Brahms in recital at WMU

Clarinetist Erik Johnson performed a recital on Friday at Western Michigan University’s Dalton Center Lecture Hall in Kalamazoo, MI. He featured a solid program of works by Mozart, Messiaen and Brahms.

The Mozart Trio VII K.498 (“Kegelstatt”) for Clarinet, Viola and Piano was ably played by Mr. Johnson with violist Daniel Cortes and pianist Derek Herzer. They showed an elegant respect for the Age of Enlightenment while bringing out the deeper emotional depth that Mozart brought to his works.
The solo clarinet movement, Abime des Oiseaux from Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuour pour la fin du temps, was played with passion and the technical mastery of a difficult 20th century work. Mr. Johnson was joined on stage by a solo dancer Lea D. Thomas, who presented a very lyrical interpretation of the work.

The final selection was Johannes Brahms Sonata, No. 1 in F Minor, Opus 120 for Clarinet in Bb and Piano. Mr. Johnson and pianist Carl Witt captured both the strong emotion and melodic inspiration of Brahms’ work. Of particular note were the beautifully lyrical second and the robustly energetic final movements.

The recital was well-received by a large, enthusiastic audience. It was another fine performance from an excellent WMU Music Department.
